Also called and spelled: Laylat al-Bara'ah, Laylat Nisf Sha'ban, the night of mid-Sha'ban, Shab e Barat, Shabe Barat, Shab-e-Baraat, Shab-e-Barat ki raat, Laylatul Bara'at, Nisf Shaban.
Shab-e-Barat is the night before the 15th of Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Hijri calendar. Muslims in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh spend it in prayer and in asking Allah for forgiveness, about two weeks before Ramadan. The name joins the Persian word shab, night, with the Arabic bara'ah, freedom or release: the night of release from sin.
What the hadith say, and how strong they are
The Quran does not name this night. Its standing rests on hadith, and those hadith vary in strength. This is the main reason Muslims observe it so differently, so here are the reports people quote most, with the grading scholars give them.
| What it says | Source | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Allah looks at His creation on the night of mid-Sha'ban and forgives all of them, except one who associates partners with Him and one who holds enmity against others. | Ibn Majah 1390, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari; also Ibn Hibban | Accepted. Al-Albani graded it sahih through its supporting chains (as-Silsilah as-Sahihah 1144). |
| Aisha found the Prophet (ﷺ) at al-Baqi' graveyard that night; Allah forgives more people than the hairs on the sheep of the tribe of Kalb. | Tirmidhi 739, Ibn Majah 1389 | Weak. Tirmidhi himself reports that al-Bukhari called it weak. |
| "When it is the night of mid-Sha'ban, stand in prayer at night and fast its day." | Ibn Majah 1388, from Ali | Very weak. One narrator, Ibn Abi Sabrah, was accused of inventing hadith. |
| The Prophet (ﷺ) fasted in Sha'ban more than in any month other than Ramadan. | Sahih al-Bukhari 1969, Sahih Muslim 1156 | Sahih. |
| Sha'ban is a month people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadan, and in it deeds are raised to Allah. | An-Nasa'i 2357, from Usama ibn Zayd | Hasan (good). |
Put together: the virtue of the night itself is supported, and so is fasting in Sha'ban as a whole. A fixed set of rituals for this one night is not. That is why most scholars agree that worshipping on this night on your own is fine, even where they disagree about gatherings and set rituals.
The one condition in the hadith
The strongest report names two people who miss the forgiveness: the one who associates partners with Allah, and the one who holds a grudge against another Muslim. The second one is easy to overlook. A night of prayer while you still refuse to speak to a brother, a neighbour or an in-law sits uneasily with the very hadith that makes the night special.
So the most useful thing you can do on the 14th of Sha'ban happens before Maghrib: call the person you fell out with, forgive what you can, and ask forgiveness for what you did.
How Shab-e-Barat is observed in Pakistan and India
- Mosques stay open late. Many hold a short talk after Isha, then leave the night for individual prayer.
- Visiting graves. Families visit the graves of relatives and pray for them, following the report of the Prophet's visit to al-Baqi'. The visit itself is a Sunnah at any time; scholars caution against treating it as a required rite of this night.
- Halwa and sweets. Making halwa and sharing it with neighbours is a South Asian custom. It is a cultural tradition with no religious basis, and kindness to neighbours is good in itself.
- Fasting on 15 Sha'ban. Many people fast the following day. It is part of the wider Sunnah of fasting in Sha'ban and falls among the white days (13, 14 and 15) of the month.
- Fireworks. Fireworks are common in some cities and injure people every year. Scholars and local authorities discourage them; they turn a night of worship into noise.
A simple plan for the night
- Before Maghrib: settle a dispute, repay or ask more time for a debt, and forgive someone.
- Maghrib and Isha: pray them in congregation if you can. The obligatory prayers come before any voluntary worship.
- After Isha: pray a few rak'ahs of nafl in sets of two, as many as you can with focus. No fixed number is required.
- Quran: read with the meaning. Surah Ya-Sin, Surah al-Mulk or any part you love is fine; no particular surah is prescribed for this night.
- Dua: ask forgiveness for yourself, your parents and those who have died, and pray for the ummah. Use your own words as well as the duas below.
- Rest: sleep for a while so that you can wake for Tahajjud in the last third of the night, the time the Prophet (ﷺ) said Allah descends to the lowest heaven every night (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145).
- Fajr: do not miss it. Staying up all night and sleeping through Fajr trades an obligation for a voluntary act.
- The day of 15 Sha'ban: fast if you are able.
Duas for the night
There is no special dua fixed for Shab-e-Barat. These two authentic duas for forgiveness suit it well.
Sayyid al-Istighfar, the master supplication for forgiveness (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306):
"O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep Your covenant and promise as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You."
A short dua for pardon (Tirmidhi 3513):
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
"O Allah, You are the One who pardons, and You love to pardon, so pardon me."
Common misunderstandings
"Destinies for the year are written tonight"
This idea comes from reading "a blessed night" in Surah ad-Dukhan (44:3-4) as Shab-e-Barat. Most commentators, including Ibn Kathir, say that verse is about Laylat al-Qadr in Ramadan, because the Quran says it was revealed in Ramadan (2:185) and on Laylat al-Qadr (97:1).
"There is a special 100-rak'ah prayer"
A prayer of 100 rak'ahs with Surah al-Ikhlas repeated in each is circulated for this night. Ibn al-Jawzi listed its hadith among fabricated reports, and an-Nawawi called the practice a blameworthy innovation. Pray as many ordinary nafl as you like instead.
"It is like Shab-e-Qadr"
Laylat al-Qadr is named in the Quran and is "better than a thousand months" (97:3). Shab-e-Barat is a night of reported virtue in the hadith. Both are blessed, but they are not equal, and the bigger night is still ahead in Ramadan.
From Shab-e-Barat to Ramadan
Ramadan begins about two weeks after this night. Use it as the switch: if you pray Tahajjud tonight, try two rak'ahs on a few more nights before Ramadan; if you fast on 15 Sha'ban, add a Monday or Thursday. Finish any fasts you still owe from last Ramadan, plan your zakat, and check the Ramadan calendar for the dates of every fast.
