Each Hijri month in Pakistan begins when the new crescent is sighted. On the evening of the 29th the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets, gathers reports from its zonal committees in the provinces, and announces after Maghrib whether the new month starts the next day or the current month completes 30 days.
The crescent is usually seen in the Arabian Peninsula an evening earlier than in Pakistan, so Pakistan's date normally runs one day behind Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar. In some years a private committee at Masjid Qasim Ali Khan in Peshawar has announced Ramadan or Eid a day before the central committee; the official date is the central committee's.
The Urdu date (اردو تاریخ) and the Sindhi date are this same Hijri date, written with the Urdu or Sindhi name of the month.
Time zone
The Gregorian date on this page follows Pakistan Standard Time (UTC+5, no daylight saving) and changes at midnight PKT. In the Islamic calendar the day begins at sunset, so after Maghrib many people already use tomorrow's date.
